Working on your paper clay  project

5/11/2017

Needs to be finished in wet clay on Friday
Needs to meet the rubric of
size - but light weight, negative space and detail on detail

On Friday we will turn in

pink sheets or work blogs on -
origami, first practice project and finished project.

Paragraph for the finished project will DESCRIBE it and how it meets the scale/rubric

second project in paper clay  -- in paper clay the paper takes the place of the 'grog' or grainy parts of the clay. How does this change it?

5/10/2017

For fifteen project points - see the first three sections of the coil and pinch rubrics and scales.... (*) see below

Make a carefully finished project - it will be fired once with clear glaze -- here if we can -- or at FLC if necessary.

you can make a vessel (pot) or a lantern or ornament that hangs or a sculpture.  (I suggest you look on line for some inspiration... )

It needs to be at least 4" tall and 4" wide -- but not use more than a 2" block of clay.  (5 pts)

Thus it needs to include a lot of Negative space (empty space). The more negative space included the better. Think about trees and how they define a huge amount of space without much bulk. (5 pts)

It should also show detail on top of detail -- in other words the structure itself needs to be detailed but also the surface needs to reflect that detail. i.e. if you use coils, the coils need to be textured, sculptured or decorated in some way. remember you are not using color. (5 pts)

You have the opportunity to earn 25 project points this week that will replace the last project on your progress scale.

(*) remember - you should have a pink sheet or a working blog entry for the origami - for a paragraph you just need a description of what you made and who was on your team - put this in the box on the front -- "I made a whale with Peter Parker and Lois Lane. I learned to make a  dolphin from  Bruce Wayne."  _ that's worth 5 points.

You also need a pink sheet or working blog for the mini paper clay project with a simple description. -"Using the paper clay was -------. I made a -------. What was easy was -----. what was difficult was -------.
again, put this on the box on the front.

For the finished paper clay project you will need a finished pink sheet and working and grading blog entry. You will do this BEFORE it is fired --- JUST THIS ONCE.

using paper clay day one....

5/9/2017

First, let's read about paper clay - look on the net and see what you can find ...

Next look at some images on the net and see what is possible.

TODAY -- with a small 1  1/2" cube - see how big a project you can make by pinching and coiling. To make joins you can use a little water.
You will get five project points today for finishing.

A new aesthetic has also emerged from combining paper and clay art traditions.[6] For example, dry paper clay is stronger than the same clay without the fiber, so work can be made thinner, and more delicate.
Using paper clay require less technical skill than conventional clay, so beginners can focus more on the creative expression of their ideas. For example, handles of soft paper clay can be added to a completely dry paper clay pot without distorting the form. Other forms built with coils no longer need to be correctly joined before drying, instead, after drying the form, paper clay slip may be applied to join the coils and fill any gaps. Breaks and cracks in both dry and fired paper clay work can be repaired with paper clay slip

What is the difference between pattern and rhythm?

5/5/2017

What is the definition of pattern?
What is the definition of rhythm?
Can you have one with out the other? Which one needs to come first?
Looking at the pictures describe the use of pattern and rhythm in each. How are they different in the slab project than in the coil project? How is the use of negative space used in each?

thinking about shape and form and color  (and May the fourth be with you! Happy STAR WARS DAY)

5/4/2017

Using the art elements of shape, form and color describe why these cars are different in idea, feeling/mood or reaction they elicit in the viewer - or user of the car.
Bonus question - why is the inside of a car so different from the outside of the car?

what is a proportion in mathematics?

What is similarity in mathematics?

How does it relate to the design element of scale?

Why are we talking about this now?
