Grading in Beginning Art & Ceramics
Keep in mind the following
An A student is working and focused over 93% of the time .93 x 55 = 51.1 minutes of the period! that means they take less than four minutes a period to stand around and visit or anything besides be on task.
Good students have good "employ-ability" skills - they are not gossiping or texting - they are doing their work.
Assignments are assignments despite your opinion of them - it they don't seem valuable maybe you are not understanding what you are being asked to do - I don't assign busy-work. I value my time and your time.
Art work will be graded when finished - 65%. Students will write a paragraph describing the work Ceramic work will be graded when the project is glazed. Drawing and painting work when it is posted with paragraph on student's weebly site.
The project must have the student's name, date & period number on the base or back of the paper. Some student work will be collected for display both for the Festival of Art as well as display around the campus.
The student will have written a paragraph and make project notes - 20% describing the work, what skills they learned, what the art and design elements are and how and why it is compelling and/or meets the expectations of the assignment. there are rubrics for assignments that a student can check while they are making it.
The grade will be entered in skyward. It is up to the ceramic student to keep all the project notes until the end of the quarter. All student will keep their work logs -At that time they will be collected in a 'packet' and turned in to make sure our records match.
Participation grade will be based on class notes, and team work - 15% .
All Students will keep a work log and make entries every day at the beginning and end of class.
All students will be part of a team in order that classroom studio is kept clean and organized. Your team work will be included in your classwork grade.
60% of the grade is project, 20% notes and 20% class work - being on task and working in a team. Extra credit in one area will not make up for deficiencies in other areas. i.e. extra projects cannot make up for lack of written work.
WORK THAT IS OVER TWO WEEKS LATE WILL BE SCORED AT 75% CREDIT, AFTER THREE WEEKS IT WILL BE ONLY ACCEPTED AT 50% CREDIT. AFTER FOUR WEEKS OR TOO CLOSE TO THE END OF THE TERM YOU CAN LOSE ALL CREDIT IF IT IS NOT TURNED IN.
Beginning ceramic students are advised to make a photo record of their work and to post it on line - if they have a weebly site, or just keep photos on their personal devices.
All drawing and painting students will be required to create a weebly blog.
Student will have a working blog which will document the progress of the work, how it is made, and what are the student's thoughts about it. It should be the place where students reflect on their process. the grading blog will show finished work and have full paragraphs that describe the work.
In addition, AP, Advanced and intermediate students will make a web site/blog on weebly that will be linked to this one. They will have a working blog which should document the progress of the work, how it is made as well as your thoughts about it. It should be the place where students reflect on their process. the grading blog will show finished work and have full paragraphs that describe the work. Students are encouraged to look at others blogs and leave constructive feedback. At the end of the semester Advanced and intermediate students will make a formal presentation of their work from this site. (It will be about 7-10 minutes.)
Because of their prior knowledge, advanced students will be expect to act in leadership roles helping the newer students.
65% of the grade is projects - which includes web entry, 20% website/final project presentation and 15% class notes - 'tool kits'.
Students need to update their project notes daily and take care to keep their work space clean. They need to work with their teams to make sure the WHOLE of the classroom is highly functional, organized and clean. Many people share the same space during the day and in order to make a inviting and creative space for all we need to work in teams in our class to keep things in order.
