You should have 2 projects in the grade book by Friday - zeros will follow soon.

9/30/2015

what are the four ways to design a project?

over all form
surface decoration
creating negative space by carving into the surface
changing the edge so that it does not describe a plane

Water

9/29/2015

what is the water cycle in the ceramics room?

Water from dish pan goes into 'bucket' by sink - strain clay/tools out. refill -only a little with faucet.

water from table goes to bucket by the door - clay in bucket by mixer. refill with water from bucket by the sink.water in bucket by back door eventually goes outside in special drain.

remember we want to let clay settle out from water. we recycle everything. Don't get soap in the dish pan or any clay water.

Why is the bucket in the glaze room different than the other ones?

#Bisque - it's done, but as of 7:30 too hot to unload. Patience.

you should be on the fourth project

9/28/2015

Are you using your progress scale? Be ready to show it this week for credit. - question for today's work log - Am I using my progress scale?

You should be on your fourth project - where are the assignments located? (check third tab under ceramics heading...projects assigned for all due dates.)

what is a firm slab - why is it different than a soft slab?
tutorial here for basic firm slab - note your project is a lantern - see me for directions
Make sure you bevel edges, make sure you let it get leather soft/hard before you attach the walls.

check your assignment scale - make sure your grading blog has at least one finished project on it now. Should be three very soon.

handling clay

9/25/2015

Beginners -
Why do you have to roll clay out the other direction with a rolling pin after you take it out of the slab roller?

Continuing
Why is it important to 'cone' the clay when you are centering it?

what do we mean by composition in art and ceramics?

9/24/2015

The root word of composition is compose
what does composition mean?

Write about the composition of these two pieces - using art and design elements and some adjectives describe them. How are they different? How are they the same?

Picture

A- The asymmetry of color contrasts with the symmetry of form and creates a sense of tension and movement. The larger and darker color appears to pull back in space against the lighter and small area. The use of color contrasts with the form.

Picture

B- The symmetry of form is in harmony with symmetry of pattern and pulls our attention to the center. The pattern also helps describe the form by outlining the edge and narrowing down the inner wall as the bowl narrows.

how many ways can I make something out of clay?

9/23/2015

What are the four main techniques used in making a structure out of clay?

HINT - pinching, coiling, slabs, the wheel! That's it - yet we can do just about anything with clay using these basic techniques.

- we can also make things out of liquid clay in molds... but we don't do that here in this class.

moving on to soft slab or tall project/vase

9/22/2015

Judging by how your pinch project looks out of the glaze (or someone else's) what could you differently on your coil pot?

What does it mean to be finished in wet clay? How can you 'finish' your project in the leather hard state?

time to start your soft slab - this needs to be done before the end of the week - usually takes 2 days.

directions are on - letsmakeart.weebly.com - link here

two kilns are out!

9/21/2015

What do you have to do to turn in your project?

what should be in my paragraph?

- what is it - describe the form, surface and color

-what new skill did I learn

-what are the art and design elements

-conclusion - what is the 'impact' feel, thought or mood of the piece?

remember to turn in your worklog today!

9/18/2015

how do you tell white glaze from clear glaze?

You need to be finishing your second project today.

Monday we demo the soft slab.

Bisque and glaze kilns should be done!

9/17/2015

What is the is the difference between the bisque and glaze firing?

beginners -
time to learn to glaze

1, clean project

2. stir glaze - clean Wisk each time - apply glaze

3 make sure base is clean

4. put on shelf in kiln room.

continuing - if you didn't do a working blog yesterday - DO IT NOW.
