Some glazing suggestions...

11/30/2016

when you are putting on many colors - which glaze goes on first - the detail or the background?

The base or background color!!

note, clear will peel off of sizable sections of other glaze and must be put on first.

white glaze will make other colors run and can be put on first as a base or second to make colors run.
white looks different over dark, than dark looks over white. experiment! But take notes!!

When using dark colors - dark green and or black - adding some white brings out other colors in the glaze. Highly recommended.

Try and use two colors for interest and to get the best coverage.

*** note from guest teacher ***

Great students, they know the routine and were working.  I'm especially impressed that they cleanup so well! --- SO nice to get that in my email!!! YOU GUYS ROCK!

Plan to finish STRONG

11/29/2016

check your progress scale - what have you gotten done?

List on your weekly sheet the projects you've finished, the ones in process, and the one(s) that you just started.

Unless I've miss-counted there are about 23 days of wet clay - some of these are Fridays or days that will have assemblies. Make sure you are on the wheel making your projects TODAY and EVERYDAY -- :)

Intermediate and Advance - you need to have a gallery up by Friday of what you have gotten done already.

Looking ahead ---

11/28/2016

Over this week we need to -
have completed your franken-pot - Due Dec 2
Before Christmas break  break you need to -
Beginning
have completed your basic wheel projects - bowls, vase, cup

Advanced - two plates, choice, set of three, multi wheel and double wall

Intermediate - bowls, tall and choice

Time to look at more complicated constructions - opening twice and making lids.
Check the videos and start planning.
IF you are thinking about holiday gifts - watch the calendar we have three  weeks to Winter Break. :)

week before thanks giving

11/21/2016

Make as many projects as you can

PUT THEM IN A BAG

I can think clearly and plan about what I am trying to learn

11/17/2016

I know the steps I am trying to master -   rate yourself at  the following steps -   4 mastery, 3 good, 2 learning 1 need help

CENTERING         4, 3, 2, 1

OPENING               4, 3, 2, 1

making a BASE     4, 3, 2, 1

pulling the WALL 4, 3, 2, 1

making a FORM    4, 3, 2, 1

trimming and compressing  the LIP 4, 3, 2, 1

trimming the FOOT      4, 3, 2, 1

remember we are going to conference schedule starting on Friday.
Turn in your tool kit notes today.
no class notes during special schedual.

making a cup with a pulled handle

11/16/2016

I can plan to make a cup -
Day one - make the cylinder body of a cup - think about form

Day two - I can pull the handle - foot the cup - attach the handle and put it in a bag so the handle and cup can get to be "one"
i.e. all the same dampness so the handle doesn't fall off when the cup dries out first.

step one - give yourself permission

11/15/2016

YOU are a valuable and wonderful human being who DESERVES to do well.

repeat after me -

I give myself permission to make mistakes and I also give myself permission to do better and better each time. As long as I keep trying I am dong wonderfully!

I need to be working towards learning all the time!

Real learning is fun, and real fun takes work!

BUT - if I'm not on the wheel --- then I can't learn. I will get on the wheel NOW and everyday!!!!!!

what are the components of learning to throw?

11/14/2016

extra clean at beginning of class -
pd. 2 sweep and any dry cleaning
pd. 3 wash all surfaces
pd. 4 wash all tools and batts
pd. 5 wash down all rings, and batts

Learning art skills is wonderful because it uses ALL parts of your mind - thinking, emotion as well as physical skills!

You have to think about it   --- thinking part - the cortex

your have to feel you can do it - the feeling part -middle brain

you have to physically learn it - the brain stem or lizard brain

remember you have three parts of your brain due to evolution -- be aware of what part(s) you are using to do what

suming up the week....

11/10/2016

Period 2         8:30 - 9:15
      Assembly       9:25-10:20

 Period 3         10:30-11:15

 Period 5         12:40 - 1:25

      Period 6         1:30 - 2:19

What is the most important thing you learned last week?

Where is your Franken-pot?

Show me your pink sheet

ADV/Int if it's not on your work blog as a unified project - then you must have that pic on your working blog.

Prepare for big clean on Monday

--- maintence is working on the kiln issues

Some things to consider -

11/9/2016

(I am out today, apologies, BUT I expect you to continue working on your projects to get them done on time. AND I expect you will do your part to clean up - it's YOUR room, take care of it!)

please answer on your tool kit

1. What have I done to improve my wheel skills?

2. what do I need to focus on right now?

-- Think about not only throwing on the wheel but also how you you use your time and space in the class.
