What is footing? How do we sign up for the wheel?

2/26/2015

We make foot rings for three reasons -
reduce the weight,
give a good ending point for the glaze
give the impression of lightness - it should 'float' above the surface.

Use the wheel sign up note book. You can sign up for one day in advance only. It goes by day - pd. 1,3,5,6.

sludging pd. 1 & 6 today!

wheel demo today - cylinder for newbes, plate for continuing students.  bisque and glaze are out - .

2/25/2015

First wheel project !! YAY !!

write down the main steps -
sitting, centering, opening/making a base, pulling the wall, finishing

throwing a plate for inter/advanced

your coil project

your soft slab

your firm slab

Continuing students -

what is on your grading blog

What 's on your work blog?

do you have a vocab page?

What projects are in process ?

reviewing what should be in a paragraph

2/12/2015

remember - skills + motif + art elements + design elements = composition = meaning

paragraph

1 Name the object by title of the assignment – i.e. pinch creature, soft slab plate, wheel bowl

Describe the size and form of the object, then the surface or features on the surface and lastly the color or colors and where they are on the surface.

2 name at least one new skill that was used in order to fabricate the project (do not narrative everything you did to make it – just the new skill you learned for this assignment.)

3 name main art element (pls. just one – it is just one paragraph) and DESIGN ELEMENT

art elements are : Line, Value, Shape, Form, Space, Color, and Texture

Design elements are - Balance, contrast, movement, Emphasis, Pattern, Rhythm, Proportion/Scale and Unity/Harmony

4 for your CM show how the skills and Design element express an idea, feeling or mood.

*WARNING* DO NOT USE SIMILIES – i.e. – it’s blue so it reminds me of the ocean.  :P

It will be

CD’s – what – describe the project

CD’s – how – skills and art & Design elements

Cm – How do the art and design elements combine with the motif to create a feeling, mood or idea

four ways to make clay projects ...

2/11/2015

remember  -
we can pinch
coil
slab - soft and firm
wheel

what is the difference between soft and firm slab

new students - general firm slab demo here....

what needs to be finished before break...

2/9/2015

New students -

your pinch pot should be shiny and finished and graded.

your coil project should be going in the bisque

your soft slab should be drying

your firm slab should be started

we will start the wheel when we return from break

continuing -

You should have two shiny projects - finished and on your grading blog

one on the bisque

two more in process

you need to have three finished working blogs

You need to have your vocab page done by Friday.

Bisque is out - how do we glaze?  (week three!) feb.9 - feb. 13

2/9/2015

What is glaze made of?

What kind of colors do we have?

What do we need to do before we glaze?

glaze demo here

mainly silica - makes glass, metal compounds like copper, iron or cobalt make color.

Mostly in mid-range firing - which we do - con 4-6 - which is good for dishes - we have earth tones, blues and greens, we can add small areas of bright colors like reds with specialty glazes

Make sure your project is bisqued and dust free! Remember no glaze on the base or it will melt to the kiln shelf!!!!
