How many tool kits/class note pages do you have?

9/30/2016

make sure you can find and organize your tool kits/class notes
should be 4 besides the one for this week.

In today's square write down two things you learned that were new to you. (Please refer to the four other pages of tool kits)

Then turn it in to the basket. make sure you turn them in TODAY not Monday.

thinking about glazes

9/29/2016

glazes can be either transparent, translucent or opaque

they can be shiney or matt

sometimes particles float in the glaze layer to give a sense of depth.

there is a layer between the clay and glaze where the two are actually mixed.

sometimes the clay body and glaze shrink at different rates and cause 'crazing' - tiny cracks.

rule of thumb - complex shape / simple glaze
                                simple shape / complex glaze

What are the two basic fierings called

9/28/2016

 and why are they different?*

What are the basic kinds of kilns and why are they different?**

What are some basic glaze firing techniques we can do here?***

* bisque - first fire cone 04 aprox. 1800 degrees F
glaze - second fire for us cone 5-6 aprox 2100 degrees F

**kilns are either electric or fuel fired - they burn gas, wood, charcoal or other.

***One can get clay and glazes to use specifically at a variety of temperatures - see chart below
low fire - often used in elementary school or bright colored table ware cone 04-02.
mid range 3-6 ---this is where we normally fire - can use as dishes
high fire 8-10. -- we can fire this hot in the gas kiln with special clay for special needs. Available for A.P. and continuing advanced students.

what is the difference between art and design elements?

*** we use art elements to make  design elements to make a composition --- art elements are like words and design elements are like sentences!

get an ipad or chrome book to look at directions for lantern firm slab from yesterday's blog entry.

one more hand project - Firm slab for inter/advanced what is your fourth project?

9/26/2016

Why is a firm slab different than a soft slab?

- for a firm slab one cuts out the shapes and then lets them get firm before putting them together.
-the project should have straight flat walls.

demo here
and here

what is your fourth project?
what technique will you have to master to make it better than the last time you made one?

How do you get credit for your group coil project?

9/23/2016

show me the pink sheet and the finished project.
have the advanced or intermediate team member post of photo of the object being received or being used by the recipient of the gift on their grading blog.
everyone will get 15 project points when this is done!
(if there is not adv/int team member then talk to me about an alternative)
+++++++++++++you have to next Friday to get in your first project before you lose full credit ++++++++++++

what is the water cycle in the ceramics room?

9/22/2016

how do we keep clay from going down the drain?

to clean up -
put all clay either in mixer or bucket.
wash very dirty stuff in buckets on the table, less dirty in dish pan in sink.

to empty water - buckets on the table as well as throwing buckets go in bucket in the back.
dishpan water goes in bucket by the sink. that water goes into the buckets on the table. Excess water gets thrown out in the back. There is a holding tank under the lawn accessible by a covered metal 'hopper'

Why is the bucket in the glaze room different than the other ones?

keep all glaze you wash off of brushes, projects or anything else in the dishpan in the sink. don't use that dishpan for ANYTHING ELSE - we not only use the dishpan to keep the glaze clogging the drain but we collect and reuse it!

How do I schedule working on multiple projects at once?

9/21/2016

check to see that your project progress scale is up to date
notice the due dates -
project one, pinch is today, however you still have 2 weeks.
both coil projects is Friday 9/23 -
looking at the calendar we have one project due each week. You need to be able to be working on more than one projects at a time and keep track of what is starting, what is drying, what is in the bisque, what is in the glaze, what needs to be graded, what's in the case and what needs to be taken out of the case and go home.
ADV&INT. make sure you have put something on your working blog today. I check them every Wednesday for progress from the week before. :)

How do I write that art paragraph?

9/20/2016

When we write about our work to turn in we will talk about
what is it - the media
how we made it - the skills
how it uses art elements
how it is composed of design elements
and all together what our experience of it is - mood, feeling or idea.

here is an example

how do I make a soft slab cup?
see the demo on
Letsmakeart.weebly.com

Your pinch pot is due this Wednesday and your coil pots by the end of the week. remember you have 2 weeks before it is too late to turn it in.

how do I turn in my project for a grade.

9/19/2016

note projects are graded by a rubric that looks at the five major aspects of your work - form, specific techniques, quality of finish, glaze and unity. ALSO - please show off your project(s) in the case. You can rotate it out as you make new ones.

answer - make sure the project is FINISHED i.e. glazed and shiny, then -write the paragraph below and show it to Ms. H. Check the rubric to see what grade you should get.  +++ also - please include your progress scale so we can indicate what grade you got on it!!

paragraph includes -
- what is it - describe the form, surface and color

-what new skill did I learn

-what are the art and design elements

-conclusion - what is the 'impact' feel, thought or mood of the piece?

INT / ADV

write the same paragraph and put it on your grading blog with photo(s) show foot ring - and tell the size!
make sure you are blogging every week by Wednesday. You need photos of your work in progress.
PLEASE also check your sites to make sure they are easy to navigate. I should not have to click three times to find your working blog!!! Try another 'theme'.
