2/29/2016

Are you doing it correctly? check out the 'how to throw' list (scale)

NEWBES - what are the basic steps of throwing?

sitting
centering
making a base/compressing
pulling a wall - making a form
trimming the lip and base

Continuing students - what can you improve?
Are you pulling all the clay up from the base?
Are you trimming the base when making the project so it is easier to foot?

time to check your progress scale

2/26/2016

My progress scale is complete and I can show it to Ms. H for credit.

MONDAY wheel demo!!
you can preview it here --->CLICK

NOTE everyone has a choice project due that can be done between other projects when convenient.

learning about kilns and clay bodies - first lunch 11:10 - 11:40

2/25/2016

What are the two basic fierings called and why are they different?*

What are the basic kinds of kilns and why are they different?**

What are some basic glaze firing techniques we can do here?***

* bisque - first fire cone 04 aprox. 1800 degrees F
glaze - second fire for us cone 5-6 aprox 2100 degrees F

**kilns are either electric or fuel fired - they burn gas, wood, charcoal or other.

***One can get clay and glazes to use specifically at a variety of temperatures - see chart below
low fire - often used in elementary school or bright colored table ware cone 04-02.
mid range 3-6 ---this is where we normally fire - can use as dishes
high fire 8-10. -- we can fire this hot in the gas kiln with special clay for special needs. Available for A.P. and continuing advanced students.

How does your progress scale look?

2/24/2016

Right now you should have at least one project graded - if you're an advanced student then 2 to 3.

-Make sure when you get something graded you note it on the progress scale! I will be checking them this week.
Please note the grading policy here

Check your progress scale and see what is on it - make sure it is up to date.

please indicate on your work log today what is graded, bisque and in progress.

using ART and DESIGN elements

2/23/2016

What are the main art elements and design elements in your
pinch pot?
Coil pot?
soft slab?
What will be different in the firm slab lantern?
check here for directions.

Intermediate & advanced

On your blog this week find some well formed bowls for your interest page. what attributes do they have - what do you need to work on?

Beginning project #4

2/22/2016

There are only 4 main ways to make something out of clay -
what are they?

-pinch, coil, slab and wheel!

New students -
what is a firm slab - why is it different than a soft slab?
tutorial here for basic firm slab - note your project is a lantern - see me for directions
Make sure you bevel edges, make sure you let it get leather soft/hard before you attach the walls.

Many of you have rushed through all your projects _ but what are the standards?
Please make sure you are checking the rubrics/scales/project lists -

Do - overs are encouraged!
it's not really centered or has uneven walls -it doesn't have a good foot ring/lip - if it's not glazed well - if it's too small or the shape is awakward.... there are not a lot of assignments but the idea is to do them very well!!! <3

make sure you have ALL the ART & DESIGN elements listed on your paper

2/12/2016

what is the difference between art and design elements?

*** we use art elements to make a project that uses art elements to make a composition --- art elements are like words and design elements are like sentences!

Wrap stuff up for the break!!!

One more time ... what are the art and design elements...

2/11/2016

When we write about our work to turn in we will talk about
what is it - the media
how we made it - the skills
how it uses art elements
how it is composed of design elements
and all together what our experience of it is - mood, feeling or idea.
here is an example

the art elements are
- Line (which can be an edge in 3d),
-value (which can be thickness or weight in 3d),
shape - this is a 2D idea - but there are many shapes on forms.
-form - this is a shape made 3D
-space - all sculpture defines space
-color - on the surface and in the clay itself
-texture - can be actual or visual - as in depth in the glaze
they are like the building blocks of composition

The composition (the artwork put together using art elements)  - can be talked about with the language of Design elements

-Balance
-Contrast
-movement
-emphasis
-Pattern
-Rhythm
-proportion and Scale
-Unity or Harmony.

What do I have to do to turn in my project?

2/10/2016

answer - make sure the project is FINISHED i.e. glazed and shiny, then -write the paragraph below and show it to Ms. H. Check the rubric to see what grade you should get.  +++ also - please include your progress scale so we can indicate what grade you got on it!!

paragraph includes -
- what is it - describe the form, surface and color

-what new skill did I learn

-what are the art and design elements

-conclusion - what is the 'impact' feel, thought or mood of the piece?

INT / ADV

write the same paragraph and put it on your grading blog with photo(s) show foot ring - and tell the size!
make sure you are blogging every week by Wednesday. You need photos of your work in progress.
PLEASE also check your sites to make sure they are easy to navigate. I should not have to click three times to find your working blog!!! Try another 'theme'.
