thinking about your paragraph ...

9/29/2017

1 - describe the image - media, subject, size, material

2 - talk about a skill that is showcased or newly learned

3 - how do the art elements make design elements

4 - what is the overall feeling, mood or idea of the image?

lets' talk about the paragraphs below - both before and edited. Also please make sure you read ANYTHING you write out loud for sense. Watch for correct usage -- allusion should be illusion and 'and' should be 'an' :)

Make sure you edit your pictures --- see how much better they look edited!

This is a drawing of swirling squares. I used a pencil and ruler to create lines to make an allusion. I also used darker lines to create depth. It uses shape with the squares and depth from how dark or light the lines are. I combined the swirling squares and other lines to create and allusion which is blended together. It has lines and value. The idea of the drawing is to trick the mind and give it a dramatic look.

This is a pencil drawing of swirling squares on paper. I changed the pressure of my pencil to create different values of lines. This change in values creates depth because the darker lines come forward in space. The lines  get smaller and smaller as they go to the middle of the squares and create a sense of movement and Drama. The idea of the drawing is to trick the mind.

(always avoid the construction - give it a ---like - look.)

ex -This is my watercolor final painting. Some art elements used in this were line, value, space, form, color and texture. Pretty much all of the art elements. The design elements used in this were contrast, movement, proportion, and scale. The media used in this was card-stock paper, watercolors, pencil, and water. The intent of the drawing was to imitate some still life leaves and try your best to paint them onto paper with the color and texture as close as you can get it.

re edit.

This is a water color painting of leaves on card stock paper.  the intent was to try your best to paint them with the color and texture as close as you could get. I learned how to let colors blend in a wet on wet technique to get a more natural color blend.  The cool blue shadows emphasize the plane of the table so they don't float in space. The contrasting colors of the greens and reds create a fun  fall mood.

finishing your two drawings

9/28/2017

'On my website by Friday will be -
on my working blog will be the box in space drawing
on my grading blog will be my pepper black and white chalk drawing.'

What's on your website now? Look at the bottom of the yellow sheet and fill it in!

check the requirements for the black and white drawing....
did you use all the values? Is the whole drawing complete? Do the marks go the direction of the plane?
remember you will need a paragraph -- see instructions.

for the boxes in space drawing  on your working blog you need to have unambiguous lines - i.e. ones in front are darker and orthogonal lines are very light. you need to have polygons.

one point perspective

9/27/2017

Picture

when we look with one eye (not binocular vision) things get smaller as they go back. They do so in an orderly fashion along

orthogonal lines

to a vanishing point

on a horizon line.

this is called one point perspective.

today - get  a pencil, a ruler, an eraser and follow along with me. use white paper so you can erase. We will make a finished sketch today to put on our working blogs. I WILL GUIDE YOU and we will all work together at first.

create a one point perspective sketch of boxes in space to put on your working blog.

follow this link

the above link comes from here - with a fuller explanation

Your drawing might look like these -- or they can be simple boxes.

another look at "how to"

Picture

exploring value

9/26/2017

describe how the edge of the ball changes in relationship to the background. Look at the pepper picture and see where the relationships of dark to light flip.

Picture

What is on the rubric for the value drawing?

9/25/2017

using big shapes accurately

more figure than ground with an active background and 'complete'

full range of values to describe
-the space and location of objects
 - to show surface and texture
 - to show edges with out an outline

link here

please try and finish the fist value drawing by Wednesday when we start working with perspective

End of week four - from line to value

9/22/2017

When starting a value drawing --

begin with outlines in very light grey
leave the white areas white!!! (it's difficult to get back the white of the paper.)
work from light to medium grey - then and only then add the dark grey
and only last the black.

blend with the chalk itself versus your finger for a better effect. You still should be making marks that describe the surface of the form.
If the form is round, make round marks -- if it is flat, like a table make straight marks that describe the plane.

working with value

9/21/2017

Today, we want to start working on adding intentional value to our drawings.  Value refers to the lightness and darkness of an object or an image.

start by making a grey scale - this should take you about 20 minutes - then post it to your working blog. You need to show five different values.

Picture

take a peice of white paper and draw 7 square in a line
about 1 1/2" each. the first one is white - leave it alone - the last will be black - make the rest will be light to dark in the best possible progression as you can make.

adv / inter assignment here - small to huge drawing

beginning assignment here

You will have 2 finished drawing in the value section - one the assignment and one of the subject of your choice. The second drawing must also focus on value not line, surface not edge. :)

rubric here

Check your finished drawing and make sure you have satisfied the rubric - I am out today - but art work goes on.

9/20/2017

on your notes - write what things you did best in your drawings -
what could you do better on?

Spend some time making your second drawing better
Make sure both of your finished line drawings get posted.

Make sure both of your finished line drawings are posted and done to satisfy the rubric --->

Make sure your paragraph is done correctly, is legiable, is in regular type, not a headline.

Make sure your photographs are on your working blog as well as sketches you made to prepare for your finished drawing.

1. I can use a wide variety of line styles, but not smudging, including contour lines, hatching and cross hatching. I can un-anchor my hand from the page and draw long complete lines when I draw.

2. I can fill up the entire page so there is more figure/motif than negative/background space.
The drawing is complex and finished.

3. I can create the illusion of three dimensions by using relative size, overlap and value changes. Things in front will be larger, darker.

4. I can indicate the plane an item  is resting on by drawing a shadow where the lines describe the plane of the table. OR make a background in a similar way so there is no un-activated empty space in the image.

5. I can use my own source and finish the drawing in a timely manner.

why is value different than line?

9/19/2017

Specifically LINE describe and EDGE

VALUE describes a SURFACE

when a surface turns it creates an edge.

the edge can be described by a change in value - which creates a kind of line!

Picture

A line is created where the two edges of the colors meet.

Picture

Edges are created where the surfaces end.

Tomorrow we start a new section on value. Please make sure you have your line drawings finished and posted so you can begin on the next group of assignments.
Again, make sure your line drawings meet the requirements for the assignment.
use only lines
have clear spaces using over lap, value and relative size
use the whole page -- i.e. finished
see rubric for how it will be graded.
also make sure you are following the grading format.

what is ART?

9/18/2017

Art is something that changes people's view of the world. It works when we the artist can share a unique perspective.

Formula for ART

It is a way we use

MEDIA (material - paper, paint, clay, ect )
+ skills
+ art and design elements
+ our point of view
= to create something that communicates to others. It can communicate an idea, a feeling or a mood.

slide talk about art here

we start a new drawing on Wednesday - so please finish your third drawing and get that posted by the end of Tuesday.
you have, in general, three class periods for a finished  drawing so use your time wisely, please. :) :) :)
