You should have three finished collages. You will need to write descriptive paragraphs about each.

The first one - how does your collage create the illusion of space (describe what overlaps, how the color works and how relative size works.)

the second one - describe how you have created symmetry.

third - describe the message of your image and how you created it.

Third paper cut out -
should have narrative elements - juxtapose contrasting images so that they gain a new 'meaning'.
The viewer should be able to 'move' through the image so that it 'tells a story' or states an idea or opinion with figurative details. These can be photos or shapes you cut out.
Use mostly analogous colors with small pieces of their compliments for emphasis.
Make sure you have large, medium & small shapes of paper - again, some are curved, some are geometric shapes. Make sure some shapes are are 'empty' in the center - cut out the middle of the shape.

second collage should be analogous colors, have layers, can have figurative elements, and should have symmetry. Note it should have shapes that are small, medium and large. Some should have curved edges and some should be geometric shapes with straight edges.

should be symmetrical, however make the center of symmetry NOT the center of the square.

hint this unit is about the elements of shape, color and composition. Remember, lines make edges make shape - imply form. Visual textures can make different values of a color by optical mixing.
Three ways to imply space - relative size (perspective) overlap and chiaroscuro and the properties of relative color warm or cool, dark or light.

You will make a series of 8" square collages that can be put together so they must be an exact size.

You will be working with monochrome and analogues colors

You will be creating your first collage today that will have monohrome colors (different values of the same hue - try textures) - and at least three layers of space. The first one will be non-figurative and non-narrative. (will not have clear representational imagery and not tell a story.)

Using values - black and white chalks - make a copy of this portrait by John Singer Sargent. See if you can use all values from black to white.

I can re-create my pencil portrait using values instead of lines with black and white pastels!

Notice - nothing is actually outlined.
Artists all use complimentary colors for skin tones.
Eyes do not have 'black dot' for pupil - but do all have highlights in them.
Line of the nose is shown on only one side.
mouths have soft edges
highlights one end of nose, cheek bones, tip of chin, forehead, and lower lip.
hair is painted in 'strands' of dark, medium and light.
What else can you notice?

*After you have finished pencil drawing - take a new piece of stiff 9"x 12" paper, make a small (half inch) boarder and re-sketch your face. follow the steps shown in the tutorial to make your painting!
