using lines

8/31/2017

Yesterday we made a contour drawing by using lines to describe shapes - these shapes created an image of a form in space.

Why did we draw it upside down?

(find the answer by scrolling down - but first...)

Try this -- quickly draw a CAT

does your drawing look more like the first or second image?
Why? what is the difference between these images?

when we look at 'the world' we usually see through a screen of preexisting ideas and verbal thoughts about what we are looking at...
In order to draw something we need to disassociate what we know about something and try to see it as a collection of shapes that we can then draw the outlines of on a 2D surface.

we need to determine the difference between what we see versus what we think about what we see!

to learn to draw then we need to learn to see 2d shapes in a 3d world
and
we need to learn drawing skills.

exercise one - click here to follow - you will make some sketches as well as a finished drawing on 9x12 paper. the finished drawing is due on Monday.
the skills you will learn are
drawing a straight line of a consistent length
and
making lines of different values and weights.
this is done by how you hold your pencil in your hand, align your arms, shoulders and body - it's a physical skill.
the value of the line is determined by how hard you press!
